Stages of Homeschooling: Letting Go (Book 3)

Which stage of homeschooling are you in? Are you new, somewhat experienced, ready to graduate one of your children or waving good-bye to your youngest? Stages of Homeschooling is a series of three eBooks that offer ideas and information for each stage of the homeschooling journey:

BeginningsEnjoying the Journey Letting Go

Writer Barbara Frank spent the last 25 years homeschooling her four children to adulthood and writing several books, including Thriving in the 21st Century, The Imperfect Homeschooler’s Guide to Homeschooling and Life Prep for Homeschooled Teenagers. Now she’s combined new material with some of her many articles and blog posts to create four eBooks that will encourage and inform you as you go through the four stages of homeschooling.

Stages of Homeschooling: Letting Go (Book 3)

So you took homeschooling one year at a time, and now, all of a sudden, you realize that your children are teens: older, taller (maybe taller than you) and still at home. Good for you! Why send off these awesome young people that you’ve raised and educated when you can keep on teaching them at home?

Barbara Frank homeschooled her four children from birth to adulthood. Two attended college (one graduated with honors, another will soon graduate with an associate’s degree), her eldest chose not to attend college but has done well without it, and her youngest, who has special needs, now works with her husband. Her experience of homeschooling teens has been wide-ranging, challenging and always interesting; in Stages of Homeschooling: Letting Go, Barbara shares what she’s learned about homeschooling teens with the goal of sending them out into the world on their own.

One unique feature of this book is that it describes some important subjects high schools don’t teach that our kids need, and that parents should teach them before they leave home for life on their own. Another, more personal aspect of homeschooling through high school Barbara discusses is letting go of our children. Letting go has always been a challenge for parents; those whose children never went to school may find it especially difficult. If you have some angst about letting go of your teens, you’ll find Barbara to be a kindred spirit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent & Relevant in the new economy July 18, 2012

As a homeschooling parent for the past 11 years, I did not expect to find much here that I hadn’t read before. I am happy to say that I was wrong! This book caused me to rethink many of my assumptions about college and the environment that my children can expect to encounter there. It challenges the assumption that a college degree is the only path to success. The author is not “anti -college” or preachy, but very realistic in her assessment of what will be necessary in the future economy. I appreciated the wisdom she imparts as a homeschool mom who has “been there.” I also enjoyed being able to access the many articles through the links provided in this Kindle book. Well done!
